For the second consecutive year, sales figures show that Volkswagen is the UK's best selling brand. Figures released on 5th January 2023 by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that the Volkswagen range had 131,850 new vehicles registered in 2022. This gives Volkswagen an 8.17% of the UK's total new car market.
The Golf was in the top ten best-selling models and the ID.3 was in the top ten best-sellers of electric vehicles. 2022 saw a record number of electric vehicle sales for the UK.
According to the SMMT figures, battery electric vehicles saw an upturn in sales of 40.1% year-on-year across all manufacturers and an overall market share of 16.6%. As electric mobility becomes Britain’s second most popular powertrain offering, Volkswagen is in a prime position to offer a diverse range of fully electric models moving forward into the next couple of years.
In addition to the ID. range of hatchback (3), SUVs (4 & 5) and MPV (Buzz) already available in the UK, the ID.7 will follow as a fully electric saloon. These 100% electric models are all based on the advanced MEB modular electric platform and manufactured net carbon neutral, which is an important factor to today's modern car buyer.
SUVs are also a key model type and the Volkswagen passenger car range has them in abundance - T-Cross, Taigo, T-Roc, Tiguan, Tiguan Allspace and Touareg.
The Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand is present in more than 150 markets worldwide and produces vehicles at more than 30 locations in 13 countries. Volkswagen delivered around 4.9 million vehicles in 2021.
