New Volkswagen Passat Estate

The new Volkswagen Passat has been given top marks in its safety assessment by Euro NCAP.

The vehicle was awarded five stars for the third time, having previously achieved top marks in 2010 and 2014.

Now in its ninth generation, the Passat achieved its best result in the Adult Occupant Protection category with a rating of 93 per cent.

Strong results were also achieved in the Child Occupant Protection (87 per cent), Vulnerable Road Users (83 per cent) and Safety Assist (80 per cent) categories.

Helping the Passat to this result were features such as Autonomous Emergency Braking, Front Assist with pedestrian and cyclist monitoring, and Car2X, which allows the vehicle to exchange information about local hazards with other vehicles.

The entry-level Passat comes with a number of safety features such as Side Assist (lane change system), Lane Assist (lane keeping system) and Adaptive Cruise Control.

This result is even more impressive given the strict criteria used by Euro NCAP in recent years.

The new requirements include, for example, the ability to detect any children left in the car. This requirement is fulfilled by the new Passat.
