Volkswagen has unveiled its ID. LIFE concept car at the 2021 Munich International Motor Show, a compact crossover aiming for a £17,000 target price and a 2025 launch date.
Based on a shorter version of the existing modular electric drive matrix (MEB), the ID. LIFE concept previews a future ID. model and the first MEB vehicle to feature front-wheel drive. A 234PS electric motor and a 57 kWh battery allow for around 250 miles of WLTP range and zero to 60mph in under 7 seconds.
The ID. LIFE features a modern and expressive design catering for the urban environment, and encourages individualist expression with a removable textile roof for an open-air experience and cutting-edge technology such as a projector and projection screen, converting the car into a potential mobile cinema or gaming lounge with a 230-volt power supply for devices.
Further flexibility comes from a seating design that allows both the front and rear seat benches to fold in various configurations. For example, the front seats can be folded flat and the rear seat back reclined to watch a movie, or they can be folded completely flat and turned into a two-metre bed!
The ID. LIFE makes extensive use of natural and recycled materials as a demonstration of Volkswagen’s commitment to sustainable mobility. The textile roof and ArtVelours eco seat material is made from recycled PET bottles, while the seat material also consists of shredded t-shirts. The interior does not use any manufactured plastic. Instead, the focus is on natural materials like FSC-certified wood for the dash and window surrounds.

The ID. LIFE is a further expansion on the ID. family, and will become the cheapest and most accessible model when it launches. The car will be a key step towards Volkswagen’s ACCELERATE goal, which aims to increase the share of all-electric models in total European vehicle sales to at least 70 per cent by 2030.
