What is We Connect and How Do I Use it?

We Connect is a technology system developed by Volkswagen to link your car's functionality and data with your smartphone. It allows you to access information and services and to control some of the functions available in your vehicle, even when you are not in it. We Connect capability is installed in 90% of Volkswagens, but requires a little bit of setting up to benefit from its full functionality.

What features does We Connect have as standard?

Volkswagen's We Connect helps you make full use of the car's data and technology. A licence for the We Connect Basic package is provided free of charge for the life of your Volkswagen.

The technology and available functionality frequently updates, but examples of a few useful features within this package includes:

  • Emergency Call System (E-Call): if vehicle sensors register an accident (e.g. through the triggering of an airbag), a telephone call is automatically placed with the local emergency services, complete with information about location, the vehicle and the number of passengers


  • Breakdown Call (B-Call): this functionality allows you to contact the Roadside Assistance call centre with the press of a button, automatically sending vehicle and location data to get support more effectively during a breakdown situation


  • Parking position: it’s possible to see precisely where your vehicle is parked and find the quickest route back to it using Google maps

  • Lock and unlock: You can control the central locking system through the We Connect app

  • Anti-theft alarm: if an attempt is made to break into the vehicle, you will receive a notification through the We Connect app on your phone or by email. The vehicle’s anti-theft alarm system also activates the horn for up to 30 seconds and flashes its lights for up to five minutes

Owners of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles also benefit from:

  • Remote charging: check your charge and start/stop your vehicle charging from the app

  • Departure times: make sure your vehicle is charged and at the optimum temperature depending on the season

  • Temperature control: control the temperature and heated windscreen from the app

DON’T FORGET to select a preferred Service Provider in the app and activate Automated Service Scheduling! By doing this, when your Volkswagen is due for its next inspection, or a yellow warning light is flashing on the dash, your car will notify your chosen retailer via the app and they will contact you to discuss and arrange an appointment. That’s one less thing to worry about!

The great thing about We Connect is that it's buildable - you can upgrade and add to it in order to enhance your user experience. You can even purchase extra functionality for your vehicle via the in-car shop - such as enhanced navigation, assistance and lighting.

How can I get started using We Connect?

Instructions for getting started on We Connect

  • Download the free Volkswagen app for your smartphone. Depending on your operating system, you will find the Volkswagen app for Android or iOS in the App Store or Google Play Store:

  • Login with your Volkswagen ID, or create an ID by setting up a Username, Password, Security PIN, and accepting the terms of use/ privacy policy.
  • Add your Volkswagen using the 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN). You can find the VIN in your registration papers and behind the windscreen of your vehicle.
  • To activate the services, you must be identified as the primary user. To do this, you will need to enter your username and password details in the infotainment system in your vehicle. Go to “settings” and select “become a primary user”
  • Have both car keys with you so that when the on-screen instructions tell you to, you can press unlock on both keys.
  • Once both keys are detected, your vehicle will be paired to your app.
