If you are just starting your EV switch and have decided to buy used instead of new for your first electric vehicle, then buying from a franchised dealer like JCB has real advantages. Buying used can make the transition to electric driving easier financially.
All our brands that manufacture EVs have an approved used scheme. This means that the used EV must reach strict criteria for quality, functionality and roadworthiness. Compared to buying privately or from a non-franchised dealer, you know that the vehicle you are buying has met the manufacturer's strict checks before being offered for sale. Electric Vehicle maintenance and repair tends to be more specialised and expensive, so buying an EV that has passed rigorous checks already is reassuring. We are able to provide battery state-of-health reports.
Most EV drivetrain batteries (as opposed to auxiliary batteries) are covered by warranty for 8 years, or 100,000 miles, whichever occurs sooner. At the JCB Group we verify the warranty status, confirm servicing history, run other checks such as mileage and outstanding finance checks and then ensure that the warranty transfers correctly to you. EV battery replacement can be expensive, so a clear and comprehensive warranty is important.
As agents and representatives of the manufacturer we are obliged to conform to strict auditing of our sales programmes. An 'Approved Used' EV will have gone through detailed manufacturer inspections and preparation standards laid down by the brand. This usually includes as a minimum - multi-point inspections, software updates, write-off checks and battery checks. The EV is then sold with additional Approved Used programme benefits such as roadside assistance, extended warranties and breakdown cover - usually Europe-wide. This way you take some of the uncertainty out of the ownership.
Servicing and maintaining a BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) is a specialist skill. Working with high voltage batteries can also be dangerous for the Technician, and so they must receive proper training and regular update training for their safety. It is also important to have proper diagnostic and servicing equipment which is specialised to the manufacturer and approved by their head office technical team. Each manufacturer cascades technical software updates and recall/update software via the secure websites and technology only an authorised repairer can access. EVs are heavily software-driven, so this matters more than with ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicles. Some regard this as a way to keep customers tied in to the manufacturer dealerships, but it is more a safety standard issue.
Making the switch to electric driving may be daunting financially. The JCB Group dealerships all have the facility for used car finance - usually via PCP or HP - and the facility to use your current vehicle in part-exchange. We will also take care of all the paperwork and registration for you. You also have the option of upgrading after a while.
We source our EVs either through the manufacturer network or from good quality trade-ins. Via both methods we still inspect stock thoroughly as per the Approved Used standards. Our reputation and that of our manufactuer brands depends on it. Our EV selection tends to be of vehicles with lower mileage, fuller service history and fewer previous owners than private or independent sales. Our EVs will come with charging cables suitable for the vehicle also.
Again, our reputation depends on satisfied customers. As an EV owner you can come back to us if there is any problem with your vehicle; you can have any warranty work carried out by our manufacturer trained Technicians; you can have your EV serviced via our dedicated Service Plans and you can pop in and ask us any questions related to the ownership of your EV. We remain available to help you long after your purchase.
We keep a very large choice of nearly-new models and approved used electric vehicle stock on our forecourts. Now that the JCB Group covers so many manufacturers in so many locations, you have a wider choice. You can be guaranteed of the same quality and value, with excellent customer service, and with the JCB Group ' Vroom' Service, you can buy from one of our branches and collect from another which might be closer to home for convenience. That way you are not restricting your search only to the local area.
We tend to stock vehicles that are no more than a few years old. Technology is moving fast, so much older EVs will not necessarily have the same range and charge capacity as 'younger' ones.
We hope this page has answered some of your questions about buying a used EV. We're sure you will have many more questions, so we are always pleased to discuss your concerns with you and offer some practical knowledge and advice on EV ownership.
