What is ULEZ? The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is designed to reduce air pollution in London. It was announced in 2015 by then Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, under the Prime Ministership of David Cameron, and it came into effect two years later. Today, ULEZ operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year (apart from 25 December). This means that if your vehicle isn’t ULEZ compliant, you’ll be required to pay a fee every time you drive in London. ULEZ charges apply to any vehicle that doesn’t meet emission standards. This means that a car or van that doesn’t feature a Euro 4 (petrol) or Euro 6 (diesel engine) is affected. Additionally, owners of motorcycles which don’t have a Euro 3 engine are liable to pay the ULEZ fee.
What areas are affected by ULEZ? Initially, ULEZ covered the same areas as the Central London Congestion Charge (roughly, Kings Cross in the north to Vauxhall in the south; Paddington in the west to Whitechapel in the east). However, since 29 August 2023, ULEZ expanded to cover all 32 London boroughs. This means that the majority of the area contained within the M25 is affected.
