Welcome to the California, the compact, classy and clever camper van from Volkswagen. Adventure comes as standard: its neat MPV‑like dimensions give it go‑anywhere credentials. The California is also loaded with kit, so you can pack light and just hit the road. The latest evolution of Volkswagen’s original and iconic camper van, each California is produced entirely in the Volkswagen factory in Germany and benefits from 60 years of technological and driving advancement. Up to four adults can eat, sleep and relax in comfortable surroundings, thanks to its innovative design, superb build standards, high‑quality materials and great level of equipment. The California is winning the hearts and minds of a new generation of camper-van fans. It’s already won over the industry, having been voted best multipurpose motorcaravan of 2010 by Which Motorcaravan.
Mealtimes made simple
Meal times are a breeze in the California – there’s everything you need to cook up a feast for the family. The kitchenette has a two-burner gas hob, and the digitally controlled fridge can hold up to 42 litres of food. There’s a 30-litre water tank with electric pump, and a 30-litre waste-water tank – so washing up is simple. And those four 12V electric points will have your travel kettle and toaster working in an instant.
The California has a sliding table in the kitchenette that is just as handy for the cook as it is for quick breakfasts. And if you need an even bigger work surface, there’s a glass worktop to cover the hob.If your meal is leaning towards the lavish side, the bigger fold-out table can be used inside or taken outdoors for those special alfresco occasions that make everything taste even better.
Sweet after dinner
It’s easy to create a warm dining atmosphere inside the California. The two cab-chairs swivel to face the back so four adults can sit comfortably around the table. Afterwards, clearing up is easy too. The kitchenette has a sink and tap, and there is plenty of cupboard space for the dishes. With the plates cleared away, you’ve got a great living area for spending quality time in the evening with family and friends.
The big sleep
You’ll come back from your holiday in a California relaxed and refreshed – because Volkswagen’s latest has two double beds that are as comfortable as they are easy to make up. That’s what makes it a great camper van for both families and couples.
The dinette transforms into a sleeping area quickly and easily. You fold out the rear bench with minimum effort to make a regular-shaped, flat double – and at 2m long it can handle six-footers with ease.
Night time should be relaxing – and it is in the California. The fully electric, aluminium lid rises hydraulically at the push of a button in the cab to reveal a large double bed with a slatted base for extra comfort. The double bed is cantilevered on gas struts – so once the roof is up, you can push the bed base upwards into the sleeping space – creating enough headroom for adults to walk around in the dinette without stooping. When it’s time for bed, you can gaze up at the night sky through the ‘windows’ in your airy upper floor, or zip them up to stay snug and private – and keep the sun out during a well-deserved long lie in.
On the road again
That push-button operation also makes it a doddle to take the roof down when it’s time to get back on the road. All the work is done by the California’s hydraulics – so packing away your upstairs double bedroom couldn’t be easier. Which means all your effort can go into deciding which beach or beauty spot you’ll be visiting next.
Luxury is standard
The California sets new standards of quality and comfort in the camper-van market, packing in loads of standard kit. You’ll find two folding camping chairs stowed neatly into the tailgate and a host of clever features to enhance the experience inside.
Passengers in control
Long trips will be no hassle for passengers. The rear two-seater bench slides forward and back so people can be as near to or far from the cab as they want. Climatic air-conditioning is standard, and optional three-zone Climatronic air-con gives temperature controls to driver, front passenger and rear passengers. The cab seats are heated, and lumbar support helps you extend travel time between stops. Travelling to colder climes, the remote-controlled parking heater warms up your camper van and clears the windscreen of frost before you step out of bed. The living area even has double glazing to keep heat where you need it.
Let there be light
Switches for the California’s electrical operations are arranged neatly in one place. The control panel above the rear-view mirror monitors fridge temperature, timings and temperatures for the parking-heater system, how much water there is in the fresh- and waste-water tanks, and battery charge. This is also where you operate the electric roof. Around the cabin are four 12V sockets and lighting that includes five LED spots and a flexible halogen lamp in the roof bed. The step is illuminated for safety.
