It's official! Volkswagen and the I.D. R Pikes Peak made history on Sunday 24th June at the 2018 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. The I.D. R Pikes Peak became the fastest vehicle ever to complete the course. It has amazed the world of motorsport by proving that an electric vehicle can be quicker than a conventional petrol equivalent.
Driven by Romain Dumas – the current Pikes Peak champion – the Volkswagen I.D. R went the full course of 12.24 miles in just 7minutes 57.148 seconds, beating the eight-minute barrier for the first time in the event’s 102-year history. Wow!
The target for the Volkswagen Motorsport team was to set a new record for electric vehicles, with a time to beat of 8.57.118 minutes- and they did it!
The car proved to be so quick that it not only broke the electric vehicle record by one minute, but also smashed the overall course record of 8.13.878 minutes by 16 seconds, which had stood since 2013, by a petrol powered Peugeot.
